My 9 year old looks so cute in these! She's been growing out of most of her medium clothing and wearing a lot of large, so we originally tried large but it was too big. Exchanged for medium and they are perfect. According to the size chart she is technically a medium, so I would say that these pants are true to size except then everything else runs small?
